Dewatering is when water is removed from the ground. It is usually done with a series of shallow wells connected to a pump. Dewatering is required for construction in areas where the ground is saturated with water or where the water table (ground water) level is high. It can also be required for soil stabilization such as when a hillside is saturated with water and could possibly slide. When dewatering a hillside sometimes directional boring is used to put in horizontal well casings with holes in the side. The water goes in the holes and comes out the pipe, removing water from the ground. Not applicable for sludge dewatering.
